You’re putting a layer of turf over the ground, and BC’s wet season isn’t exactly gentle. Will water pool underneath? Will the yard turn into a swamp come November? Here’s what’s actually going on underneath the turf, and why it holds up better than it might look on paper.

Synthetic Turf Drainage, It Starts at the Foundation

Drainage isn’t something bolted on after the turf goes down. It starts at the very first step, when the ground gets excavated and the crusher dust base goes in.

In regions that don’t see a concentrated rainy season, installers sometimes build the base with a slight slope from the start, so water is guided toward a drain or a specific low point in the yard. That works fine where rain tends to come and go quickly rather than sitting around for weeks at a time.

BC’s climate works differently. Rain here doesn’t just pass through. It settles in for weeks at a time. Lean too hard on a sloped drainage approach in that kind of climate, and you risk water concentrating faster than it can actually drain, pooling at the low end instead of moving through. That’s part of why the more common approach in BC is to keep the foundation flat and level, and let drainage happen through permeable materials — the crusher dust base and the turf backing itself — rather than through a slope.

What Crusher Dust Is Actually Doing Down There

Once the ground is excavated, crusher dust goes in next, and it gets packed down tight before the turf ever touches the site. Most people think of it mainly as a leveling material, something to create a firm, even base for the turf to sit on. That’s true, but it’s only half the job.

The other half is drainage. Packed properly, crusher dust becomes permeable enough for water to pass straight through instead of pooling on top of it. Rain moves down through the turf backing, into the crusher dust, and continues down into the ground below. Getting that packing right also keeps things from shifting or sinking in spots later on, which ends up mattering as much for drainage as it does for how the lawn feels underfoot.

Good drainage design only works if the drainage holes actually stay clear. Over time, dust, dirt, and other debris can settle into the backing and start blocking those holes, slowly at first, then enough to notice after a heavy rain. This is one of the main reasons artificial turf still needs occasional maintenance, even though it doesn’t need mowing or watering the way natural grass does. A periodic rinse or brush through helps keep the drainage holes doing their job, and it’s a small effort compared to dealing with pooling water later on.

None of this is complicated once you know what’s happening beneath the surface. A flat, well compacted foundation, a permeable base, turf backing that actually drains the way it’s supposed to, and a rinse every so often, that’s really the whole system.
